Gotthard Base Tunnel, SwitzerlandBilfinger Berger, together with partners from Switzerland and Italy, is constructing the technically very challenging 6.2-kilometer core stretch of the Gotthard Base Tunnel near Sedrun. At 57 kilometers, it will be the longest rail tunnel in the world and is expected to go into operation in 2017. One of the challenges faced by engineers at the Sedrun Lot is the servicing of the construction site via two 800-meter shafts. At the end of these shafts, two tube tunnels are being driven both northwards and southwards using advanced mining techniques.
